2022 Visual Analytics Certificate (VAC) Course
Visual Analytics Certificate: Unlock the power of data and position yourself for success.
Join us for the next Visual Analytics Certificate (VAC) course<https://visanalytics.cns.iu.edu/> which runs January 10-February 20, 2022 and earn 3 CEUs from the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at the Indiana University Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. This six-week online asynchronous course is designed for the working professional and will provide the theoretical and practical grounding you need to design insightful visualizations. With applications from human resources to business intelligence, visual analytics harness today's computing power with the power of human pattern recognition to unleash the real value in your data. Developing skills to access insights to data is key to making crucial decisions in today's world. Register here<https://visanalytics.cns.iu.edu/>. Additional course information may be found here<https://visanalytics.cns.iu.edu/dld/visual_analytics_certificate.pdf>.
Employees from numerous corporate, government, education, and nonprofit organizations have found the VAC class to be valuable. Participating organizations include:
* The Boeing Company
* Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council in UK (BBSRC)
* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
* City of Bloomington, IN
* Cummins
* Eli Lilly and Company
* James McDonnell Foundation
* National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
* Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane)
* Office of Naval Research (ONR)
* Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)
* Space Telescope and Science Institute (STSCI)
A component of the course includes working on practical, real-world projects. The project takes participants through a series of steps that allow the participant to explore various visualizations and decide which will relay the best insights given the stakeholder's objective. The project component is set up as a mock consultation with a client or stakeholder and includes the following steps: Primary Objective, Insight Needs, Stakeholder Analysis, Data Acquisition, Data Analysis Methods, Data Visualizations, Interpretation of Results.
Project examples from past VAC participants include:
* COVID-19 Impact on NSWC Crane Work Behaviors
* Supply Chain Management Strategies
* Software Development Optimization Methods
* Quality Benefits of the Use of Augmented Reality in Aviation Production
* Effects of Schedule Pressure and Bleeding Edge Infrastructure Technology on Boeing Acoustics Software Quality
* Inbound Sales Call Conversion Rates
* Hispanic Cancer Mortality
* Staffed Hospital Bed Availability
* Traffic Patterns in Alaska Over Time
* EPA Air Quality Consequent to Forest Fire Consumption of Townships
Below are testimonials from a few of our participants:
UX Researcher & Designer, Eli Lilly and Company "As a User Experience Researcher, a large part of my job is to clearly communicate my research findings and tell stories with the data. This course has given me a clear framework and methodology for creating more meaningful and useful data visualizations. Now I feel like I can hold a decent data vis conversation with the analysts I work with, enabling better collaboration and more innovative ways to share my research insights."
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) Participant: "The structure of the course allowed us to very flexibly fit this learning amongst our existing busy schedules. The content was incredibly well aligned to our everyday analyses and it was particularly neat how a meeting with our international colleagues co-incidentally fell within the week we were exploring international networks as part of the VAC. A great opportunity to immediately put our latest learning into practice!"
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) participant "For me personally, the course was excellent at delivering the theoretical framework for data-driven decision making using the Data Visualization Language framework. The weekly curriculum was iterative and extensive enough to continue forward while also performing with my professional responsibilities. I did feel that it was extraordinarily beneficial to take the certificate program within a larger cohort of professionals from the same organization, as this offered a greater impact to how we individually approached our projects with insights provided by internal colleagues as well as our external course instructors."
