At Georgia Tech, we're seeking PhD candidates wishing to study data
visualization via a variety of disciplines <http://vis.gatech.edu>. Our
six faculty within Computing conduct research on a variety of related
subtopics including information visualization, visual analytics,
enterprise computing, data mining, network analysis and healthcare
analytics, among others. We offer two doctoral degrees: a PhD degree in
Computer Science (CS) and a PhD in Human-Centered Computing (HCC)
The CS PhD <http://www.cc.gatech.edu/future/doctoral/phdcs> is a
relatively traditional computing-focused doctorate where students
specialize in a particular area of computer science such as HCI or
Computer Graphics. Students must pass a comprehensive exam in the area,
take 3 courses outside CS for their minor, and complete a dissertation.
Georgia Tech founded the very first HCC degree program
<http://www.ic.gatech.edu/future/phdhcc> in 2004, focusing on the
intersection of computing and people - where computing includes not just
computers but also different kinds of computational artifacts from games
to mobile applications, from robots to bionics and mobile applications;
and people includes not only individuals but also teams, organizations,
societies and cultures.
The HCC Program values diversity in all its dimensions; our students
have a broad range of backgrounds, coming from across the world and with
a variety of different undergraduate degrees. The program's curriculum
<http://www.ic.gatech.edu/future/phdhcc/program> is flexible, allowing
considerable customizing based on individual
interests: three core courses, three specialization courses and three
minor courses.
In both programs, students receive tuition and a competitive
stipend during their studies; outstanding US students are additionally
eligible for the President's Fellowship ($5500 per year for four years).
Applications are due December 15; see
<http://www.cc.gatech.edu/future/doctoral/phdcs/admissions> and
<http://www.ic.gatech.edu/future/phdhcc> for additional program and
application information. PhD admissions are committee-driven and
selected; individual faculty do not accept students.
