*ABOUT THE WORKSHOP*
-----------------------
Maps have been used for centuries as a tool for exploring the real and
the imagined, the physical and the metaphysical worlds. Today, in the
world of technology, maps also play an important role as an underlying
representation tool, forming the basis for a wide range of digital
devices, applications, and services. Despite this, there are hardly any
venues for sharing of research and design expertise, learnings,
practices, and experiences of the use of maps and map-like
visualizations in the context of visual interfaces and interactions.
This workshop aims to fill this gap by providing a much-needed
interdisciplinary forum focusing on map-based interface and interactions.
This workshop is part of the 17th International Conference on Advanced
Visual Interfaces, and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on
Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability.
*CALL FOR PARTICIPATION*
-----------------------
The main objective of this workshop is to create an interdisciplinary
forum for sharing of research, design, and practical expertise,
practices, and experiences that are currently dispersed across different
disciplines. Therefore, the workshop aims to bring together participants
from all the related disciplines, including visualization, visual
design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography, and
by doing so support the participants’ research and design work in
creating novel future map-based interfaces and interactions across a
wide range of application areas.
Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a short paper
describing their interests and work related to the topics of this
workshop. Some of the main topics to be covered by this workshop will
include, but are not limited to, the following:
- research and design foundations of map-based interfaces and interactions.
- theories, principles, and practices guiding the design of map-based
interfaces and interactions.
- applications of map-based interfaces and interactions, in areas such
environment, sustainability, epidemiology, healthcare, education, games
and entertainment.
- user evaluations of map-based interfaces and interactions.
*WORKSHOP STRUCTURE*
-----------------------
This one-day workshop will be informal and interactive, combining short
presentations of the accepted workshop position papers with group
discussions, aimed at assisting the authors and other participants with
developing their research and design ideas. The workshop will include a
hands-on group activity, as part of which the participants work in small
groups to perform map-based design tasks and create visual sketches for
an interactive map-based application tool.
We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions
will, however, be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if
necessary.
*SUBMISSIONS*
-----------------------
The workshop short paper submissions should be of maximum 6 pages, and
the extended abstracts should be 1-2 pages. Submissions should be in PDF
format, and prepared according to the ACM Primary Article Template
(https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template).
Submissions should be made through Easychair
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mapii2024).
The workshop programme committee will review the submitted short papers
and extended abstracts, and select 10-15 submissions for presentation at
the workshop based on their quality, relevance to the workshop topics,
and potential to raise interesting discussions at the workshop.
Accepted submissions will be shared with the workshop participants. The
authors of the submissions will be invited to contribute an extended
version of their submission to a special issue of a peer-reviewed
journal we are currently negotiating. In addition, the workshop will
include a discussion session on future publications in, for instance, a
co-authored report or journal article for dissemination of the workshop
findings.
