The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow. The appointment is a 12-month position, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, and will commence on August 1, 2023.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field on or before August 1, 2023. This position is part of a collaboration between the Computer Science department at American University, the Environmental Science department at American University, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The successful candidate will become a part of an interdisciplinary team working to visualize global seafood trade data to understand when global seafood trade either improves or threatens food and nutrition security. The project aims at developing novel methods and systems to support the construction and analysis of a global seafood trade network database to advance human-environmental research. The focus of this postdoctoral fellow position at American University will be in analyzing geographic network flow datasets and delivering novel and interpretable representations on the web. Candidates must have a strong programming background.
Requirements:
* Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical field.
* Strong background in interactive data visualization and analysis.
* Expertise in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and other technologies supporting website development.
* Experience with server-side web technologies, such as NodeJS and Flask, is preferred
* Experience with online databases, especially network database schema (e.g., Neo4J), is preferred
* Experienced in designing and implementing empirical user studies.
* Experienced with quantitative research methods.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse interdisciplinary team.
* Demonstrated ability to work with and mentor undergraduate students.
* Excellent written and oral communication.
* Research experience in spatial data analysis and/or GIS technologies is preferred.
