CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ACM ISS DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM - EXTENDED


The ISS Doctoral Symposium (ISS DS) is a single day invitation-only forum in which Ph.D. students can meet and discuss their work with each other and a panel of experienced researchers in an informal and interactive setting. Participants can expect an opportunity to present their dissertation research in a supportive environment and to receive constructive expert and peer feedback on their research topics and possible career paths in both academia and industry. The Symposium aims to support community building by connecting beginning and established researchers. The ideal time to apply to participate in the DS is when some progress has been made in Ph.D. research, and a path to completion is planned but could benefit from outside opinions and refinement.


Students should submit a paper that describes: the problem that the thesis aims to address; the broad approach and how it builds upon and goes beyond key relevant previous work; the work completed and the plan for the full dissertation work; and open questions/issues for discussion and/or what you want to get out of participation in the symposium. Completed work may be presented as an overview or highlighting a particularly important part in depth.


Doctoral Symposium papers will be published in the ISS conference companion proceedings, distributed at the conference and published in the ACM digital library. All research topics suitable for the ACM ISS Conference and associated workshops are appropriate for the DS. The DS chairs aim to achieve diversity among the student participants, including diversity across research groups and geographical areas.


All Ph.D. students are welcome to apply regardless of whether they are presenting at the main conference or not. Each submission will be reviewed by both DS chairs to assess its suitability for the DS, as well as additional expert reviewers when necessary. This will be based on whether the work is sufficiently mature to present but still early enough for the student to benefit from the feedback and experience of the panel.


Accepted authors will present their work to the DS chairs and expert reviewers and participate in an intensive workshop around ISS research. They will have *free registration*. The Doctoral Symposium will take place at the conference venue on Sunday, November 10, 2019 (for accepted authors and invited experts only!).


IMPORTANT DATES


*        Extended to 30 August, 2019, 5:00 p.m. PDT: Deadline for submissions

*        Tuesday, 2 August 2019: Author Notifications

*        Sunday, 8 September 2019: Final Manuscript Submission


SUBMISSION


Every submission should include both an extended abstract (no more than six pages in ACM landscape format) and a draft poster design. You may also submit a video and you are encouraged to do so if this clarifies the work, as is often the case in ISS interfaces.
