[Infovis] Call for Participation: 2018 ZJU International Summer School on Visual Analytics [7/27 - 8/7]

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Through July 27th to August 7th, the *2018 ZJU International Summer School
on Visual Analytics* will be held at the Zhejiang University in one of
China’s most scenic cities, Hangzhou. The focus of this summer school will
be big data visualization and visual analytics, delivering the latest
research findings and advanced toolkits in these fields.



In this summer school, preeminent researchers from all around the world
will share their expertise, and members of the summer school will also have
the chance to visit the tech giant Alibaba Group's headquarter.



The summer school will bring together hundreds of talented students,
professionals, and dozens of outstanding researchers in the field of visual
analytics. Undergraduate/graduate students and working professionals who
are interested in advanced techniques for data visualization are welcomed
to apply.

*Benjamin Renoust*

Osaka University, Japan

Benjamin joined the Osaka University Institute for Datability Science as a
Lecturer since 2018.

His current interest cover Graphs and Multimedia Analytics, a crosspoint
between Visual Analytics and Multimedia Analysis, in which he brings a
special touch of Network Analysis that combines heterogeneous and
relational information.


*Dennis Thom*

University of Stuttgart, Germany

Dr. Dennis Thom has been working at the Institute for Visualization and
Interactive Systems, University of Stuttgart since 2010.

He participated in research and development efforts in the EU 7th Framework
Project PESCaDO and coordinated the University of Stuttgart participation
in the BMBF-Project VASA. His research interests cover the areas of visual
analytics, data mining, information retrieval, and social media monitoring.


*Issei Fujishiro*

Keio University, Japan

Fujishiro is currently Chief Professor of the Center for Information and
Computer Science, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio
University, Yokohama. His research interests include volume
visualization/graphics, applied visualization design, and smart multi-modal
ambient media. He is serving on the steering committee for IEEE SciVis and
IEEE PacificVis and serving as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on
Visualization and Computer Graphics and Elsevier Journal of Visual
Informatics as well as a SciVis Papers Co-Chair for IEEE VIS 2018.
Fujishiro is a member of Science Council of Japan.


*Jaegul Choo*

Korea University, South Korea

Jaegul Choo is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and
Engineering at Korea University. He focuses on the intersection of machine
learning and visual analytics, publishing over 60 peer-reviewed technical
articles in premier venues in both fields such as TVCG, CHI, VAST, CG&A,
CVPR, AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, WWW, WSDM, ICDM, TKDD, DMKD, ICWSM, and SDM. He
earned the Best Student Paper at ICDM’16, the Outstanding Research
Scientist Award at Georgia Tech in 2015, and he was nominated as one of the
four finalists for the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group dissertation award
in 2013.


*Kwan-Liu Ma*

UC Davis, USA

Kwan-Liu Ma is a professor of computer science, where he directs VIDI Labs
and UC Davis Center of Excellence for Visualization.

His research spans the fields of visualization, computer graphics,
high-performance computing, and user interface design. Professor Ma is
presently leading a team of over 25 researchers pursuing research in
scientific visualization, information visualization, visual analytics,
visualization for storytelling, visualization interface design, and
immersive visualization.


*Rüdiger Westermann*

Technical University of Munich, Germany

Ruediger Westermann studied computer science at the Technical University
Darmstadt and received the Ph.D. in computer science from the University of
Dortmund, both in Germany. In 2002, he was appointed the chair of Computer
Graphics and Visualization at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He
is one of the main drivers of the Visual Computing and Computer Games
initiatives at TUM. His research interests include scalable data
visualization and simulation algorithms, uncertainty visualization, GPU
computing, and real-time rendering.


*Stefan Bruckner*

University of Bergen, Norway

Stefan Bruckner is a full professor in Visualization at the Department of
Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway.

His research interests include all aspects of data visualization, with a
particular focus on interactive techniques for the exploration and analysis
of spatial data. He has made significant contributions to areas such as
illustrative visualization, volume rendering, smart visual interfaces,
biomedical data visualization, and visual parameter space exploration. In
addition to his contributions in basic research, he has successfully led
industry collaborations with major companies such as GE Healthcare and Agfa
HealthCare, and has 6 granted patents.


*Tobias Schreck*

Graz University of Technology, Austria.

Tobias Schreck is a Professor with the Institute of Computer Graphics and
Knowledge Visualization at Graz University of Technology, Austria. He works
in the areas of Visual Analytics and Digital Libraries. His research
interests include visual pattern search and analysis in time-oriented,
high-dimensional and 3D object data, with applications in data analysis,
multimedia retrieval and cultural heritage. He has co-authored more than
150 papers in his research areas. He is currently a principal investigator
in several Austrian state-funded research projects on Immersive and Visual
Data Analysis for industrial applications.


*Wei Chen*

Zhejiang University, China

Wei Chen is a professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG, Zhejiang
University. He has performed research in computer graphics and
visualization and published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal and
conference papers in the last five years. His current research interests
include scientific visualization, visual analytics and bio-medical image
computing.


*Xiaoyang Mao*

University of Yamanashi, Japan

Xiaoyang Mao received her B.S. in Computer Science from Fudan University,
M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Tokyo. She is
currently a professor at Computer Science and Engineering Department,
University of Yamanashi, Japan.

Her research interests include texture synthesis, visual perception,
non-photo-realistic rendering, VR/AR and their application to visualization.


*Yingcai Wu*

Zhejiang University, China

Yingcai Wu is a ZJU100 Young Professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG,
Zhejiang University.  He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from
the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Prior to his
current position, Yingcai Wu was a researcher in the Microsoft Research
Asia, from 2012 to 2015, and a postdoctoral researcher in the University of
California, Davis from 2010 to 2012. His main research interests are in
visual analytics, information visualization, and human-computer
interaction, with focuses on urban computing and sports analysis. He has
published more than 50 refereed papers and his three papers have been
awarded Honorable Mention at IEEE VIS (SciVis) 2009, IEEE VIS (VAST) 2014,
and IEEE PacificVis 2016.

The 2018 ZJU International Summer School on Visual Analytics will convene
in Hangzhou, China, at the Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University.
