The Interactions Lab in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Information Visualization Design.
Job Description:
The Innovations in Visualization (led by Sheelagh Carpendale) and the Data Experience (led by Wesley Willett) labs are looking for a Post Doctoral Fellow in Information Visualization, Design, and/or Interaction Design. The project is an open data initiative that is focused on developing advanced, interactive data visualizations that will help make Canada's energy data publically accessible, transparent and understandable.
The successful candidate will be deeply involved in the research in the lab, working closely with domain experts and stakeholders, creating new design ideas, developing new visual representations, fine tuning designs, and creating prototypes and communicating these designs to relevant team members. They will also be involved in mentoring students who are working on the project. The successful candidate's work will include participating in various outreach activities - including designing and running workshops and providing formal and informal demonstrations to appropriate stakeholders. The successful candidate's work will focus explicitly on designing novel interactive visualizations and interaction techniques and will include opportunities to publish that work at visualization venues.
Qualifications:
PhD or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Design, or a related field. A background in information visualization and with extensive experience designing and developing interactive visualizations is important. This position will also call upon the candidate's ability to understand and apply data analysis approaches in a broad range of domains. We are interested in candidates with an ability to bridge the gap between scientific endeavors and real-world applications, producing results with high external validity. Experience designing and conducting both qualitative and quantitative studies are also strongly preferred.
