Decisive 2017 : Dealing with Cognitive Biases in Visualisations

We make thousands of subconscious decisions daily and often apply simplified rules or heuristics to speed up the process. Most of these are good enough, however when there is some uncertainty we can make what appears to be irrational decisions, leading to inaccurate judgements, also known as cognitive biases. Over the last 40 years, hundred of cognitive biases have been documented, such as the confirmation bias, where people unconsciously seek out information that confirms their current belief, ignoring information to the contrary. Despite a growing awareness of the detrimental effects of cognitive biases on decision making, there is little work on how to detect this behaviour in those who use visualisation-based applications and even less on how to minimise their effect. The aim of this workshop is to bring together people from a wide range of disciplines such as information visualisation, visual analytics, software engineering, cognitive psychology and decision science, as well as those close to end-user groups like intelligence analysts and medical practitioners, to explore some of the ways in which cognitive biases impact user performance and share ideas about practical ways to reduce or overcome these potentially harmful effects, especially in adapting the tools developers design and build.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* cognitive biases in visual decision support system
* empirical methods for investigating cognitive biases
* visual analytic systems that support bias detection
* analytic techniques to mitigate cognitive biases
* integrating cognitive bias mitigation into existing software
* cognitive biases in collaborative systems (group biases)
* new classification schemes/frameworks for cognitive biases
* evaluation of decision support techniques/strategies
* cognitive biases in information visualisation (state of the art)
The workshop will include invited talks from experts in the field of cognitive biases and decision making, and short individual presentations. The afternoon session will be hands-on group activities and a forum for participants to exchange ideas and identify future research potential. We hope to continue to grow this interdisciplinary community to promote future collaboration.
SUBMISSIONS :
We invite authors to submit technical papers of 2 to 4 pages in length (plus 1 page for references). All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field, and relevance to the workshop. Authors of accepted papers will then be invited to contribute to the workshop through individual presentations and/or a poster presentation in the main conference. Papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library and will be available on the conference usb drive. Further details on website.
