The Geographic Information Visualization and Analysis group at the University of Zurich invites applications for a doctoral research assistant position in Geographic Information Science/Geovisualization to work on a research project related to geovisual analytics. The highly motivated, successful applicant is asked to suggest, develop, and answer a timely and relevant research question related to spatio-temporal knowledge discovery and knowledge construction using geovisual analytics displays (including spatialization).

Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Master’s degree (by thesis) in a relevant area, e.g., Geography, Geographic Information Science, or Computer Science. You have an established background in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies for data collection and data analysis. Applications from women and under-represented groups are especially encouraged. You are familiar with information visualization including (carto-)graphic design and (geo-)data mining. You have solid implementation skills (e.g., Java, JavaScript, C#, or similar) and are confident in, for example, implementing an interactive geovisual analytics system. You have a proven ability to work independently on guided projects, and are interested in presenting your results orally and in scientific publications to a larger scientific audience. You have a very good standard of written and spoken English, and knowledge of German, whilst not required, would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be hired on a 1-year contract (starting February 1st, 2018 or soon thereafter), which will be extended to the nominal 4-year PhD period after positive evaluation.
