The 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice is an opportunity for

visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences,

insights, and ideas in applying the latest visualization and visual analytics

research to real world problems. The focus of this year's workshop will be the

design, development, distribution, and application of open source

visualization and visual analytics software. The workshop will include an

invited keynote, a session of talks, and a poster session in which live

demonstrations of open source tools will be given.



All accepted submissions will be given the opportunity to present in the

poster/demonstration session. At the discretion of the conference organizers,

approximately 12 submissions will also be selected to give an oral

presentation during the talk session.



The 2016 VIP workshop will be held in conjunction with IEEE VIS in Baltimore,

Maryland during the week of October 23-28.





Topics

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:



- Design of open source visualization or visual analytic systems and libraries

- Demonstrations of new open source tools that address practical visualization

problems

- Critiques of existing open source visualization systems, informed by

real-world usage, with suggestions for improvement

- Retrospectives on the process of turning research prototypes into robust,

open source software

- Discussions of the state of the open source visualization ecosystem---how

well do existing tools interoperate? where are there substantial gaps?

- Best practices for using open source visualization tools and adopting them

within organizations

- Proposals for researcher-practitioner collaborations to address real-world

visualization challenges



We especially encourage submissions from practitioners who apply visualization

and visual analytics to real-world problems in journalism, industry, national

laboratories, government, non-profits, etc.







Submission

----------------



We solicit submissions of extended abstracts of up to 2 pages, IEEE paper

format guidelines (http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html) plus

up to 12 additional figures (beyond those in the abstract) which cover the

visual content you would include in your final poster or in a talk, if invited

to give one. The images should be appended to the 2-page document (thus, your

whole document may have more than 2 pages). You are invited to use captions in

order to explain your images. To clarify, we count a Latex figure as one item

regardless of how many sub-images it contains.



Optionally, you may submit a video (MPEG, AVI, or Quicktime format, duration

at most 5 minutes) showing your methods or processes in action. This will be

most helpful for demonstrating the effectiveness of your approach. If you

would like to have your video included in the conference USB stick, it should

not exceed 100MB.



Abstracts will be reviewed for their potential applicability to the VIP

workshop audience and their potential positive impact on the broader open

source visualization community. Additionally, they will be reviewed for

timeliness, clarity, and overall quality of writing. Where applicable, the

described open source software will also be reviewed for robustness,

applicability, ease of access (e.g. github repository), licensing,

documentation, and ease of running an initial demonstration. Submissions

should provide clear directions to where the software can be downloaded.



Note that research novelty is explicitly not a criteria for evaluation at the

VIP workshop.



All submissions for the 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice should be

submitted via the Precision Conference System (link will be posted at

http://visinpractice.org). Submissions must be received on or before July 29,

2016 to be considered. Questions about this workshop or requests for help with

In order to maintain interactive and exciting presentations and posters, we

require that at least one presenter per accepted submission attend the

workshop.

All submitted abstracts and the accompanying material will be published on the
