INTERACTIVE VISUALIZATION OF BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in Information Visualization/Biological Data Visualization in the Department of Computer Science and Digital Technologies at University of Northumbria at Newcastle, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Biological networks, such as metabolic pathways, can be seminal tools in understanding biological functions and processes. However, such pathways are often large and complex, making them difficult to overview and interpret, and a large number of pathways can often be related to the biological phenomena of interest. Furthermore, substantial amounts of meta-data are commonly available and have the potential to further increase understanding of the biological process.

Building on the supervisory team’s previous work in multivariate data visualization, biological visualization and bioinformatics, and guided by the interests of the candidate, this project will address some of the challenges involved in visual analysis for understanding of biological processes. Within the project the candidate will design and develop novel interactive visualization methods for exploration of biological pathways and investigate how common visual representations of such pathways can be improved and extended to support understanding of complex biological phenomena.

This project will suit a candidate with programming skills who has experience of visualization/visual analytics, HCI and/or data mining.

FUNDING
This is a fully funded PhD studentship that provides full support for tuition fees, and an annual tax-free stipend at RCUK rates (for 2015/16 this is £14,057 p.a.)

APPLICATION AND ENQUIRIES
Application deadline: Friday, October 16, 2015

It is proposed that this studentship will commence between 1 November 2015 and 1 February 2016.
