CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:

Information visualization and visual analytics tools have tended to focus
on data that is important to science, finance, business, and government.
These tools have typically been designed for experts, including
scientists, financiers, and other professionals. However, individuals are
now increasingly able to collect and manipulate large volumes of data
about themselves (e.g. biometric data, exercise, sleep, and nutrition
data) as well as data about topics that interest them (neighborhood
statistics, sports metrics, environmental data, etc.). This "personal
data" is creating new opportunities for both visualization and visual
analytics, and presents a variety of new research and design challenges.
Recently, the visualization community has started to consider the emerging
and important case of "personal visualization" and examine the challenges
and potential associated with collecting, visualizing, and making sense of
personal data. 

 

This workshop, held in conjunction with the  <http://ieeevis.org/> 2015
IEEE VIS conference in Chicago, will examine the opportunities and
challenges for personal visualization and personal visual analytics. The
venue will provide an opportunity to discuss the current landscape of
personal visualization tools and approaches as well as highlight ongoing
work in this new area. 

 

We welcome submissions both as papers and as posters/demos.

 

PAPERS

Authors should submit a 2-4 page position paper in
<http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera_tvcg.html> TVCG format
which describe a personal visualization challenge, informed by their own
research, observations, or thinking about personal visualization and
analytics. Position papers should clearly identify one challenge and
discuss implications for the visualization community.

 

POSTERS/DEMOS

Authors wishing to demo should submit a 2-page description of the work in
<http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera_tvcg.html> TVCG format,
accompanied by an A0 poster and/or a plan for an interactive
demonstration. Posters and demos should present new or ongoing research on
the topic of personal visualization. Example demonstrations might include
tools the authors have built for themselves, for relatives, or for novice
communities, while poster submissions might include design ideas and early
sketches describing new personal visualization tools and concepts.

 

 

TOPICS AND SCOPE:

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

* Defining and exploring the relationship between personal visualization
and parallel research areas such as personal informatics that focus on
collecting personal data.
* Providing approaches for visualizing and making sense of large
quantities of multi-dimensional, temporal, multi-variate personal data.
* Examining the role of communities, sharing, and privacy in personal
analytics.
* New application areas that involve personal data (health and well-being,
environmental concerns, sport monitoring, etc.).
* Designing visualization and analysis tools for non-expert.
* Exploring the relationship between personal visualization tools and data
portraits, data sculptures, and other artistic representations of personal
information.
* Evaluation tools and strategies for measuring the impact of personal
visualization.
* Visualization designs that consider factors such as pleasure,
gamification, and engagement with personal data.
